How scrap metal recycling works
Separate metals: copper and brass are worth much more than steel. A magnet tells you if it is steel or iron.
Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners contain refrigerant that federal rules (Clean Air Act Section 608) require a certified technician to recover. Many yards only take them with a recovery tag.
Many states require scrap yards to record your ID when you sell metal, so bring a photo ID.
